Watch this video- this is exactly what I have done for years. I bought an OBD11 reader on Amazon a while back for $20. Most of the time, when the check engine light come on, it just a sensor or something that you can repair yourself. After you find out what needs to be repaired, do another google search to find out how to fix it. I'm not talking about replacing transmissions, but 90% of the time you can easily fix it at home yourself.
